The extruding is only part of a line of two stage extruder inside the production process. It is essential that it is specified correctly to create the final product from the material of choice with the required production rate. What feeds the material and what will happen the extruder for getting together, calibration, dimensional control and handling of the final product is associated with equal importance.

The specifying process starts considering the final product. Once this really is determined, the complete line is usually designed. The physical weight per meter on the product will, to a specific extent, determine the size of the extruder required but it's not at all as simple as nevertheless we want to generate at, say, 500kgs for every hour. An extruder can be specified to begin this, but it may not be possible to make, calibrate and cool the next product at this fee, so the extruder can not be specified in isolation to the other process.

The raw material for being processed will influence the theory of the extruder, for example, how the screw flight journey and compression ratio is made and how long is a barrel. This is expressed to be a ratio of the length to diameter belonging to the processing screw. The compression ratio determines how much shear heating and work is placed in the material to build a homogenous melt. Certain materials need more time screws and barrels to add to the residence time inside the extruder to give more for heating and plasticising so they can increase the production rate. Different materials need higher compression and shear rates to enable them to be processed consistently. This is really a time/temperature relationship within the actual screw and barrel from the extruder. Other materials need quicker screws and barrels in addition to lower compression rates to cut back the possibility of energy degradation during processing. Probably the most common type of extruder is often a single screw machine but some thermoplastics process greater on twin screw machines that will have either parallel or conical screws.

Some two stage extruder materials process better over a machine with a vacuum vent situated to the barrel to remove volatiles as well as small amounts of moisture within the material. Thermoplastic materials method at different temperature requirements, from as low as 100°C approximately 400°C+ for some executive thermoplastics. This temperature determines the heaters required, particularly for any tooling to be fitted on the extruder. Higher temperature requirements will demand more robust and costlier heaters.
